What is Inland Empire MediaWatch?
Inland Empire MediaWatch provides news and analysis about media in California’s Inland Empire. It is written by CSUSB media studies professor, Dr. Thomas (T.C.) Corrigan.
Where is “the I.E.”? And what cities and media does Inland Empire MediaWatch focus on?
California’s Inland Empire is a diverse and rapidly growing region roughly an hour east of Los Angeles (in good traffic). Technically, “the I.E.” (as locals call it) spans the entirety of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties — a massive area stretching from the L.A. county line to the Arizona and Nevada borders. However, this newsletter does not cover all of that two-county region. Rather, it focuses on local news media in the I.E.’s population center — the greater Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metro area. This metro area stretches from Chino and Ontario in the west to Redlands and Yucaipa in the east, and from San Bernardino south to Riverside and Corona. Collectively, 3+ million people live here — in “the heart of the Inland Empire.”
Inland Empire NewsWatch analyzes and critiques the institutional structure and content of local news media in the greater Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metro area. This area is home to news media of varying sizes, structures, and quality, including: four daily newspapers (all owned by the Southern California News Group), many more weeklies, an NPR and PBS affiliate (KVCR), minority-serving and Spanish-language outlets, and several digital news sites and social media feeds. The greater Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area does not have its own local broadcast television stations, so residents rely on L.A. stations for occasional local TV news coverage.
